1 in 5 drivers crash in their first year of driving.

1 in every 319 young male drivers will be killed or seriously injured in a car crash in the next 12 months.
1 in every 754 young female drivers will be killed or seriously injured in a car crash in the next 12 months.
An 18 year old driver is more than 3 times more likely to be involved in a crash than a 48 year old driver.
Young drivers are more likely to have crashes involving loss of control of the vehicle, crashes on bends, in the dark and crashes due to inappropriate speed.

There are many reasons why young drivers are more likely to be in crashes than more experienced drivers.

Lack of Experience
This is one of the main reasons. As new drivers gain more experience, their crash rate begins to fall.

Attitude
Young drivers, especially men, tend to be over confident and are more likely to drive in risky ways. They consistently rate their own skills as above average, despite the fact that their accident risk suggests otherwise. They commonly see 'good driving' as the ability to master the controls of the car at higher speeds.

Hazard and Risk Perception
Although younger drivers tend to have excellent vehicle control skills and fast reactions, they are poor at identifying potential hazards and assessing risk. They tend to over-estimate their ability to avoid the hazard and its consequences. It takes new drivers up to 2 seconds longer to react to hazardous situations than more experienced drivers.

Peer Pressure
Younger drivers are more susceptible to peer group pressure, especially when carrying their friends. Their risk of crashing increases with the number of passengers in the vehicle.

Gender
Young male drivers are more likely to commit driving offences or be involved in an accident than female drivers.

Motorised Vehicle Accidents Involving Drivers Aged 17 to 25

The Bulletin

Statistical Bulletin 55/2006 (PDF 966kB)

Additional Tables

The bulletin uses personal injury road accident data for Wales and compares personal injury accidents in Wales that involve young drivers (aged between 17 and 25 inclusive) with those involving other drivers.  The figures cover accidents up to the year 2005 as a whole. Some of the main findings are shown below:

  • Young male drivers are over 6 times more likely to be involved in an accident than older drivers (aged 26 and over; all older drivers, males and females together).
  • Young female drivers are around 3 times more likely to be involved in an accident than older drivers (aged 26 and over; all older drivers, males and females together).
  • All young drivers are between 4 and 5 times more likely to be involved in an accident than older drivers (aged 26 and over; all older drivers, males and females together).
  • Since 1999, the reduction in total accidents has been the result of a fall in accidents amongst older drivers.
  • During 2005, young drivers were involved in 3,559 personal injury road accidents in Wales. This represented over two-fifths (41 per cent) of all personal injury road accidents in Wales.
  • 435 of these accidents (12 per cent of all accidents involving this group) resulted in either fatal or seriously injured casualties.
  • This proportion of 17 to 25 year old drivers involved in accidents varies across Wales.  The proportion is relatively higher in the Valleys, and on the Isle of Anglesey.
